Not Enough Lumber on your desktop
The whole game in its own window, for Windows, macOS and Linux. Free.
The desktop app plays the game version bundled with its installer; website updates arrive when you install a newer desktop version.
On a phone? Play in your browser — it is the whole game, and there is nothing to install.
Rather not download anything? Play in your browser instead: the same game, the same matches, the same people.
What the desktop app gives you
- Its own window, full screen from the first launch, with no tabs and no address bar.
- No browser keys in the way: Ctrl+W, F5 and the rest belong to the game.
- Starts with no connection, for matches against the computer.
- Your settings and saves, kept by the app itself.
It does not update itself yet. When a new version is out, get it here and install it over the old one; online, the game tells you when a room is on a different version.
Windows
Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit. It installs for your account only, so it never asks for an administrator.
What you will see the first time
- Your browser may say the file is not commonly downloaded. In Edge, open the … menu on the download, choose Keep, then Show more and Keep anyway. In Chrome, choose Keep.
- Open the file. Windows shows a blue box: Windows protected your PC. Click More info (the small link under the text).
- A Run anyway button appears at the bottom. Click it.
- The installer runs and opens the game. On an older Windows 10 it may first download Microsoft's WebView2, which the game draws with.
If Windows says Smart App Control blocked the file, there is no Run anyway button: that setting refuses every unsigned app. Play in the browser, or wait for the Microsoft Store version, which is signed.
macOS
macOS 13 Ventura or later. One download for Apple silicon and Intel Macs.
What you will see the first time
- Open the downloaded
.dmgand drag Not Enough Lumber onto the Applications folder beside it. - Open it from Applications. macOS says “Not Enough Lumber” Not Opened, because it cannot check who made it. Click Done — not Move to Trash.
- Open System Settings, then Privacy & Security, and scroll down to “Not Enough Lumber” was blocked to protect your Mac. Click Open Anyway.
- Confirm with Open Anyway and your password or Touch ID. From then on it opens like any other app.
On macOS 13 or 14 there is a shorter way: Control-click the app in Applications, choose Open, then Open again.
Linux
An AppImage for 64-bit PCs: Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12, Fedora 36 or anything newer. Nothing to install.
Download .deb for Debian / Ubuntu
For the .deb package, open it in your system's software installer, or run sudo apt install ./not-enough-lumber-*.deb.
What to do
- Let it run as a program: right-click the file, choose
Properties, and turn on Executable as
Program (older desktops: Allow executing file as
program under Permissions). Or in a terminal:
chmod +x not-enough-lumber-*.AppImage - Double-click it, or run it from the terminal.
- If nothing happens on Ubuntu, it needs FUSE:
sudo apt install libfuse2(on 24.04 and later,libfuse2t64).
Why the warnings
Windows and macOS warn about any app whose maker has not paid for a signing certificate, and the game is a one-person project that has not, yet. The warning is about who made the file, not about anything found in it. The Mac version will be signed once the Apple membership is in place, and a signed Windows version will come through the Microsoft Store.
Until then you can check the file is the one published here, byte for byte. Each download above lists its SHA-256; compare it with yours:
- Windows, in PowerShell:
Get-FileHash .\not-enough-lumber-*-setup.exe - macOS, in Terminal:
shasum -a 256 not-enough-lumber-*.dmg - Linux:
sha256sum not-enough-lumber-*.AppImage
The same numbers, for every kept version, are in releases.json.
Or install it from your browser
Chrome and Edge can install the browser version as an app with no warning at all: open the game and choose Install from the icon at the right of the address bar. It keeps the browser's limits (some keys still belong to it), which is what the desktop app is for.
Uninstalling
- Windows: Settings, Apps, Installed apps, Not Enough Lumber, Uninstall. It asks whether to delete your settings and saves too.
- macOS: drag Not Enough Lumber from Applications to
the Trash. Your settings and saves stay in
~/Library/WebKit/com.notenoughlumber.gameand~/Library/Application Support/com.notenoughlumber.game; delete those two folders to remove them as well. - Linux: delete the AppImage. Settings and saves are
in
~/.local/share/com.notenoughlumber.game.
